Poudre Cap, 1890

File — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 3
Identifier: CFC2018.0420
Abstract "L'Huitre et les Plaideurs, " Le Laboureur et ses Enfants, "; MM, and WL. These are large cards! The approach to each scene comes from traditional sources, like Dor é for the oyster scene on the beach and the river scene between wolf and lamb. Notice that the wolf's neck here is so elongated that he may look more like a horse! The scene of the old worker on his deathbed is strongly reminiscent of the classic painting of Socrates in his last hours. The milkmaid seems quite nattily dressed up...

Shreddies, 1964

File — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 3
Identifier: CFC2018.0421
Abstract

These seven cards are a pleasant surprise. Shreddies are apparently a Post production in the British Commonwealth. Bilingual cards make a great deal of sense in Canada. The fables on the two sides of the cards are not identical. In fact, none of the twelve fables overlap. The cards show a nice variety in their visual arrangements and even styles. The lower right features a short bio and a bust of the author on each page of his series.

Cacao Van Houten, 1920

File — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 3
Identifier: CFC2018.0422
Abstract

This may be the only folding trade card I have found. The advertisement-illustration itself is engaging. When the printing is carefully done, as in GA and MM, the illustrations are excellent! Others, like FG and FC, seem less well executed. Who knows how many cards were in these sets, and how many different language sets were produced! The fables represented here include FC, FG, FS, GA, GGE, MM, TH, TMCM, and WC.

Solution Pautauberge, 1900

File — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 3
Identifier: CFC2018.0423
Abstract Beautifully colored cards with the full text of the fable on the back. The bright colors, including yellows, pinks, and oranges, bring a new kind of life to Doré's somber illustrations. Beneath the text of cards in the "P" format is a standard pitch for Solution Pautauberge, which cures old and new rheumatism and all forms of bronchitis. It also prevents tuberculosis. On the back of the cards in the "K" format mention of anything but the fable is gone. Imagine my surprise at finding one...

Phosphatine Florian Monochrome, 1910

File — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 3
Identifier: CFC2018.0419
Abstract The pictures used are identical with those used in the colored set, and the same texts and printer's designs are also used, but the setup of each card, front and verso, is slightly different. These cards are not numbered as are those in the colored series. What a curious repetition! And how strange that I have not come across it until now! Each verso contains its fable text bordered on three sides by a floral display.Young Chicken & Old FoxTwo Cats...

J. & P. Coats Needles and Threads, 1881

Item — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 3
Identifier: CFC2018.0424.4
Abstract As in the 1881 card copyrighted by Auchincloss, a monkey restrains a cat by means of a Coats thread while he holds a fish before the cat's face. On the back of this card, by contrast with that, is an advertisement for J. & P. Coats which starts "We will not weary you with statistics…." Statistics made up the whole back of the other card! A dealer has noted on the back of the card that it is pictured in Cheadle, Victorian Trade Cards (and now, three weeks later, I cannot find it...

New Remington Sewing Machine #3, 1885

Item — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 3
Identifier: CFC2018.0424.8
Abstract The tortoise is carrying the Remington sewing machine on its back. It is hard for me to tell what the hare is doing! The card lists both a Broadway address in New York City and a factory in Ilion, NY. The verso has a stamped message from J. Ernest Hammond, Bauneg-Beg, Maine. The message invites, in part, the submittal of "names and addresses of 20 ladies that you believe would be interested in our goods or act as agents, and The Monitor will be sent you 6 months free." We also read "Ladies...

"The Monkey and the Cat's Paw," New Home sewing machine available at Leavitt & Brant in Boston, 1885

Item — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 3
Identifier: CFC2018.0424.6
Abstract

The monkey works the foot-treadle with "New Home" clearly stated in its metal-work. The cat sits atop the sewing machine. Is his paw caught in the machine? A Victorian woman enters the room with an arm upraised; her small son is behind her. Blank back; no text. Perhaps three inks were used: blue, brown, and red.

"The Monkey and the Cat's Paw," New Home sewing machine, 1885

Item — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 3
Identifier: CFC2018.0424.5
Abstract As in the other card with this design, the monkey works the foot-treadle with "New Home" clearly stated in its metal-work. The cat sits atop the sewing machine. Is his paw caught in the machine? A Victorian woman enters the room with an arm upraised; her small son is behind her. Blank back; no text. Perhaps three inks were used: blue, brown, and red. By contrast with the other card, this card lacks mention of a specific retail outlet. The reds in this copy are much stronger, for example, on...

"The Monkey and the Cat's Paw," New Home sewing machine, 1885

Item — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 3
Identifier: CFC2018.0424.7
Abstract As in the other cards with this design, the monkey works the foot-treadle with "New Home" clearly stated in its metal-work. The cat sits atop the sewing machine. Is his paw caught in the machine? A Victorian woman enters the room with an arm upraised; her small son is behind her. Surprisingly, the manufacturing company is now located not in Union Square in New York but rather in Orange, MA. The verso advertises L.W. THompson of Cherry Valley, NY as a seller of the New Home Sewing Machine. ...

J. & P. Coats Thread, 1890

Item — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 3
Identifier: CFC2018.0424.2
Abstract This is one of the most dramatic trade cards I have. The lion is bound up with threads, and the mouse sits perched on a spool of J. & P. Coats Best Six Cord thread. The other side of the card gives the fable and a long application, both apparently taken verbatim from Croxall. The card's picture is in a style different from all other Coats cards I have found, especially when it inserts three colored boxes to give information: "Spool cotton," "For hand and machine," and "See the other side...

Pastilles Poncelet, 1911

Item — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 3
Identifier: CFC2018.0424.9
Abstract

This is a delightful, well-preserved card. The folded view is a traditional one of FC. Open the fold and you will find that the crow has not a cheese in his claw but a box of Poncelet cough drops. "I let go of the cheese the other day, but I am hanging on to my Poncelet cough drops!" The well-dressed fox weeps. This piece of ephemera has lasted wonderfully for almost one hundred years!

Alph. Babotte, 1890

File — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 3
Identifier: CFC2018.0426
Abstract These five cards all have a gold background, whether sky or wall in the individual scene. On CJ the gold has deteriorated. Two (CJ and TB) have a stamp on the picture advertising Chocolat Poulain (see my Chocolat Poulain Orange cards). The images belong to a series that appear in this collection in several places: Maison Salmon, Alcide Picard, and Verger-Haquet. The most animated and engaging of the scenes here may be that of the mother stealing her child away from the wolf, while the...

French MM card advertising "Beef-LaVoix, Vin-Viande, Quina-Phosphate.", 1890

Item — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 3
Identifier: CFC2018.0427.1
Abstract

The milkmaid here is a young girl carrying an umbrella and a basket in addition to the jug on her head. The card seems to have some text cropped, though the borders on the image side seem appropriate as the card is.

French MM card advertising "Cacao Delacre.", 1890

Item — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 3
Identifier: CFC2018.0427.2
Abstract

The image is the same as on my "Beef-LaVoix" card. The verso lays out various sizes and prices of Delacre's cocoa and chocolate.

French MM card advertising "Au Moine Saint Martin, 50, Rue Turbigo.", 1890

Item — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 3
Identifier: CFC2018.0427.3
Abstract

I am surprised to find another card in the series. It is ¼" higher and less than ⅛" wider than the "Beef-Lavoix" card but belongs clearly to the same story and approach. Here the maid's pail has fallen, and she is crying. According to the verso, Moine St. Martin in Paris sells all sorts of clothing and many other things. And the store stays open on Sunday until 5 pm! What a lucky find!

Bergougnan/Boutigny, 1890

Sub-Series — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 3
Identifier: CFC2018.0428
Abstract Each of the colored pictures here includes a quadrangular text of the fable from La Fontaine or, in the one case noted above, Florian. It also includes five circles arranged in relation to a major illustration of the story. Bergougnan seems to have been a major seller of rubber products, especially for automobiles. The cards frequently advertise Caoutchouc. Thérèse Boutigny is advertised as "Marchande de Mode" in Amiens. The two Boutigny cards were printed byi PaulVallier, Clermont FD...

Beukelaer Anders Trade Cards, 1925

File — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 3
Identifier: CFC2018.0429
Abstract

This series is identical on its picture sides with Gallaher cigarette cards. I give an example here of the new advertising title superimposed on the picture. Two cards are missing: #2 and #67. Each verso mentions "F.S. de Beukelaer, distillateur Anders." I have trouble tracking down both Beukelaer and Anders. For images of the cards in this series, see the Gallaher cards. An anomaly is that the first card, pictured here, is not numbered on its verso as are all the others.

Bouillon, Rivoyre et Cie, 1880

File — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 3
Identifier: CFC2018.0431
Abstract The human scenes are provocative, as when a prince, living out WL, condemns a handcuffed human being to the executioner in the presence of some natives. "Le Lion Amoureux" uses Samson and Delilah for its human scene, just as OR uses David and Goliath. In FG, the amputee on crutches can only look at the beautiful well-dressed woman as he passes by. The text of La Fontaine's fable is on the back side of the "Au Printemps " (AP) and other Bouillon & Rivoyre (BR) cards. Several with " L....
