Calvet-Rogniat La Fontaine Cards, 1960

File — Box: CFC Fables Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2018.0287.1-35
Abstract Strong, colorful presentations of the fables. The picture side includes the large illustration and a title beneath. The verso contains the title again, the text of the fable, La Fontaine's name, and the "Editions Educatives: Paris" logo. I enjoy the expression on the face of the bumpkin fisherman (note the striped stockings) as he hauls in his little fish. Also well portrayed is the greed of the man in GGE. The illustrator represents the notion of "belling the cat" physically by having the...

Billy the Buck, 48 Cards, 1952

File — Box: CFC Fables Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2018.0283.1-48
Abstract The dealer came up with this surprising offer when I asked for fables. This is a set he played with his children (or when he was a child?). Their method was to shuffle the cards and see how the story developed this time. This is really an exciting adventure story rather than a fable. The images are simple paintings of chases, escapes, fights, hunts, and rescues. The back of each card is identical except for the individual card's number in the series of 48. The back advertises an album that...

Dandy Animal Fables (Black Back), 1971

File — Box: CFC Fables Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2018.0284.1-200
Abstract These cards are divided into stories, with as many as twelve cards going to one story. Four titles (Danish, English, German, and French) at the top of the card introduce four brief texts in verse. The stories include various types, including Aesopic fable: FG (#13-18), BW (#19-25), "The Fox, the Lamb, and the Little Mouse" (#39-44), FS (#66-72), DS (#101-107), WL (#108-114), FK (#115-121), "The Bad Turn" ("The Bear and the Gardener," #121-128), "The Porcupine and the Hare" (#129-140), "The...

Danmarks Billede Serie: "Dyrefabler 1-200", 1953

File — Box: CFC Fables Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2018.0285.1-39
Abstract

These cards represent a real curiosity. Those in the first 90 numbers are identical with the same numbers in "Dandy Black Backs." Those above #90 go their own way. It is of course not always easy to ferret out fables from folktales. Clear fables here seem to be #110 (#102 in the Dandy series and #115 (#107 in the Dandy series) -- both representing DS -- and #200 (OF, identical with #200 in the Dandy series).

Identifier: CFC2018.0286.1-6

These are simple, strong presentations of the fables. The picture side includes the large illustration, "Fables de la Fontaine," and a title beneath. The verso contains the title again and the text of the fable. Simple forms and dramatic action are the chief qualities here.

Landouzy Frères Cards, 1935

File — Box: CFC Fables Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2018.0289.1-10
Abstract

These cards have large and lively blocks of color. Each card has a clear title at its base in white against a red background. In one of the four corners of the image is the card number. The verso has a title, a verse text, and "Imp. Landouzy Frères Lambersart." The "9" on UP is printed backwards. Not all printers get everything right!

Der Wolf und das Schaf: 10 Fabeln für unsere Kinder, 1935

File — Box: CFC Fables Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.196.1
Abstract I presume that we found these at Black Swan in Oakland. I found an offer on German Ebay guessing that these were done in 1935-40. The surprising things in this set include the German "Fraktur" Gothic script, hard for many of us to read. A further surprise is the ultra-thin paper used for these ten "cards." I have debated whether to list them as pages or as cards, and finally decided to list them under cards – because, though they are not on cardstock, they do what cards usually do – and...

Nouvelles Galeries Oudry Cards, Set of 4, 1935

File — Box: CFC Fables Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2018.0290.1-4
Abstract These are high class renditions of Oudry's work on very fine cards slightly larger than 4½" by 6 ½". The printing of the image indents that portion of each card. The verso has title, text, "La Fontaine," and "Edition des Nouvelles Galeries," Nouvelles Galeries seems to have existed in Angers, Saint-Denis, and Besançon. Cards #46 through #50 of the first set and cards #1 through #6 of the second set drop the line at the bottom of the image side: "Edité par les Nouvelles Galeries." One...

Oudry Tapestry Cartoons, 1935

File — Box: CFC Fables Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2018.0291.1-13
Abstract

These are satisfactory renditions of Oudry's work. The seller has the same question I have, namely, "Are these postcards?" I find it unusual that they were printed in France but marketed somewhere in English speaking territory. As the seller also points out, the envelope is torn, but the cards themselves are in very good condition.

Story Cards: Aesop's Fables, 1995

File — Box: CFC Fables Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2018.0292.1
Abstract Here are forty-eight fable cards, four to a page, to tear from the 8½" x 11" book. On the back of each card is the appropriate title and story. The color cartoon work is well done. The whole dead donkey is loaded onto the uncooperative horse (#3). "The Lion and the Fox" (#7) is done in terms of written invitation and written response. I am not sure I remember ever seeing "The Men and the Chameleon" (#38) before. "The Donkey's Brains" (#47) shows the hole in the donkey's head quite...

Louvre Felix Lorioux Cards, 1900

Item — Box: CFC Fables Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0035.1-19
Abstract The verso contains the title and fable, perhaps with one or two vocabulary footnotes. The front features "Au Louvre," though in different typeface. The major portion of the front is taken up with Lorioux' glorious colored illustration, often with "E. Desfossés" below the La Fontaine illustration. At the bottom is the fable's title and a selection of two or three lines from the poem. The lively work of Lorioux has been a favorite of mine for a long time. I was not aware of this series of...

Vieillemard/Chocolat Guérin-Boutron/Chocolat Louit, 1887

Item — Box: CFC Fables Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0010.1-16
Abstract Excellent and witty art. Often an animal story is rendered in a human scene, as in FG (a thin man walks away from a butcher shop), DW (a bum walks with a dog-leading burgher), 2P (a rich man throws money, while a poor man has to dig into his pocket for it), and TH (a legless beggar beats a legged one!). The art seems heavily dependent on Grandville (note the face of the bumpkin in "The Cock and the Pearl"), with perhaps some influence from Doré. 68 cards, of which ten feature fables of...
