Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Carlson Fable Collection is a gathering of primary fable materials at Reinert Alumni Memorial Library at Creighton University. It grew out of the personal collection of fable materials gathered by Rev. Gregory Carlson, S.J. and was given to the Creighton Libraries in 1996. There are more than 10,000 books and approximately 8,000 artifacts in the collection.

From plates to stamps, from cards to whiskey decanters, from toys to posters, you'll find just about anything you can imagine here. Please explore all that is to offer here in my fables Catalogue of Objects.

This is the largest online catalog of fable related objects on the internet. Many are from Aesop's Fables but you will find La Fontaine, Velazquez and Krylov also represented in this collection.

Abstract

1. The curved edge of each of these plates, almost an inch in width, has a green, gold, and red pattern. Then in the center is a multicolored illustration. Here the disgruntled fox stands away from the stork and his vases and looks at the viewer. All three of these plates show some rust and staining. They may have spent some serious time in someone's attic or even sand-box! 2. The Ox and the Frog is the best preserved of the three plates; it seems to lack the pock-marking of the other two. The composition of the design balances the two main animals, frog and ox, nicely. In a moment, this scene will not be so placid! 3. The wolf towers over the lamb. A viewer who wants to check can find that the water is indeed moving from the wolf to the lamb. Another pleasing composition!
