Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Carlson Fable Collection is a gathering of primary fable materials at Reinert Alumni Memorial Library at Creighton University. It grew out of the personal collection of fable materials gathered by Rev. Gregory Carlson, S.J. and was given to the Creighton Libraries in 1996. There are more than 10,000 books and approximately 8,000 artifacts in the collection.

From plates to stamps, from cards to whiskey decanters, from toys to posters, you'll find just about anything you can imagine here. Please explore all that is to offer here in my fables Catalogue of Objects.

This is the largest online catalog of fable related objects on the internet. Many are from Aesop's Fables but you will find La Fontaine, Velazquez and Krylov also represented in this collection.

Abstract

CP. The design is taken from that used on the Coats (1885?) card in the apparent series of eight. In fact, it may be the same design, cropped to a narrower card (3"x4") and less well printed. There is a text on the reverse. On the front, Wheeler & Wilson have a nice logo of two red W's on a blue circle.

CP. The design is exactly the same as in the Cheadle and Hanson cards (1900?, above), but both card and image are scaled down--from 3"x4" to 2½"x3½". The image is also more exact. The dimensions and typesetting are the same as those on the other Wheeler and Wilson cards.

FC. The design is taken from that used on the Coats (1885?) card in the apparent series of eight. In fact, it may be the same design, cropped to a shorter card (3"x4") and less well printed. There is a text on the reverse. On the front, Wheeler & Wilson have a nice logo of two red W's on a blue circle.

"The Fox and the Crow." The card is the same as that for Estey Piano Company that I have listed under "1890?" The text on the reverse is exactly the same down to the printing.

"The Fox and the Goat." The card is the same as those for Huntington Pianos and Estey Piano Company that I have listed under "1890?" The text on the reverse is exactly the same down to the printing, but no advertising is added. This card was poorly aligned and cut by the printer. On the front, Wheeler & Wilson have a nice logo of two red W's on a blue circle.

"The Leopard and the Fox." The card is the same as those for Huntington Pianos and Estey Piano Company that I have listed under "1890?" The text on the reverse is exactly the same down to the printing, but there is, instead of the printed advertisement for Estey a stamp: "Love Bros, The House and Farm Furnishers, Worthington, Indiana."

LM. The reverse has the text of the fable and "D.Smith, Sole Agent, 94 Hodson Ave."

"The Tortoise and the Hare." The card is the same as that for Estey Piano Company that I have listed under "1890?" The text on the reverse is exactly the same down to the printing.

FG. The reverse has only the prose text of the fable.
