Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Carlson Fable Collection is a gathering of primary fable materials at Reinert Alumni Memorial Library at Creighton University. It grew out of the personal collection of fable materials gathered by Rev. Gregory Carlson, S.J. and was given to the Creighton Libraries in 1996. There are more than 10,000 books and approximately 8,000 artifacts in the collection.

From plates to stamps, from cards to whiskey decanters, from toys to posters, you'll find just about anything you can imagine here. Please explore all that is to offer here in my fables Catalogue of Objects.

This is the largest online catalog of fable related objects on the internet. Many are from Aesop's Fables but you will find La Fontaine, Velazquez and Krylov also represented in this collection.

Abstract

The photographs show Steiff-like stuffed animals and dolls engaged in the scene. All three Crucy cards contain messages from Gentilly (one is dated in 1975) written in the same hand and signed with the same name (Camard?). For me the effort to be cute costs these scenes heavily. Perhaps the most intriguing shows the two mice of TMCM dealing with wine and sausage.

MSA (#13) Is that a hedgehog who is acting as the son of the miller?

TMCM (#15) The sausage and wine make for fun, but problems of scale hurt this picture.

"Les Animaux Malades de la Peste" (#33) This may be the most successful of these cards; the collected animals have their own charm.

FC (#12). The bill of the crow in this picture seems odd. Has it been forced into an awkward position so that it can hold the cheese? The verso of this card follows the format of others in the series but does not mention "Studio J.M. Piettre."

MM (#34). Here a doll has a pitcher on her head. I believe that the photographer got this picture just before the doll tipped over!

GGE (#32). Has the face of this farmer been made up to make him even more menacing?

"Ass and Dog" (#28). Scale is again an issue here. The basket is highlighted to show what the ass will not help the dog to enjoy.

WL (#27). The animals are well posed here to express the wolf's domination of the defenseless lamb.
