Die Grille Künstlerpostkarte No 216, 1930

Item — Box: CFC Postcards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0080.1
Abstract

This an unusual pose and setting for the cicada! Despite the cold weather and her scant clothing, she seems more like a pinup girl than a starving artist! The chromolithographic presentation of color and gestalt is good. The card may be datable by the fact that the recto shares picture and message room, while the entire verso – in German -- is for the addressee and address. This card was never posted.

Glucalcium Clevenot by Forguet, 1960

File — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0002.1-4
Abstract

Here is a set I have not seen before. The artist's name seems to be "Forguet, perhaps with a first initial of "R." Lively cartoon scenes!

Le Lièvre et la Tortue, 1940

Item — Box: CFC Postcards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0003.1
Abstract

"Le Lièvre et la Tortue": Patt's particular contribution to this scene seems to be the presence of a boy and a girl, both apparently surprised by the results. "Imprimé en France." Never used. Again, this card is smaller than the others.

Milk Maid Extra, 1920

Item — Box: CFC Postcards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0006.1
Abstract

This further card in the series of Mauzan's work has the same dynamism and emotionality one sees in his other cards. Her wooden shoes are still flying off, her jug is broken, and she lands on her face. All three of her dreamed of animals are fleeing. Well done! Bertrand tells me that this card completes this series. A German postcard trader knows that I have collected Mauzan and sends me regularly other work of Mauzan, some of it tending toward the pornographic…..

Oyster and Litigants, 1920

Item — Box: CFC Postcards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0006.3
Abstract

The expressions on all three characters' faces are excellent. The exaggerated mode of dress for each emphasizes the roles well. It is easy to enjoy Mauzan's presentation of each fable!

V. Spahn, Nos. 7, 15, and 17, 1950?

Item — Box: CFC Postcards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0039.1-3
Abstract The text of the fable takes up most of the message-space on the verso of the cards. Under the picture is "Fables de la Fontaine" in Italics at he lower left and a block-print title at the lower right. The modes of translating the fables into children's life are fascinating here. The emphasis is not on simple "cuteness." The children can play the fable straight, as in "L'Huitre et les Plaideurs" and GGE. FC is thus about one child stealing a ball while another sits up a tree and watches his...
